Study Tips – How to Study for High School Finals
Some of the most common study questions are about finals, and rightly so. For many high school students, their final determines their success or failure in a class. This test can account for 50% of a student’s mark for an entire semester of work. Here are four steps that will help ensure that you get the most out of your high school finals study sessions.
1. Make sure you have all your materials.
Few things are more annoying than continually having to collect your school supplies. Make sure you have all the books and other materials you need for this course. Frankly, however, your books should just be a reference at this time. You took good notes and studied all along, so your most important documents are not in your books. It’s in your own words on your own paper.
You also want to make sure you have enough gear to stay in place for at least 50 minutes. A writing utensil, some paper on which to create new review papers, and a focused mind should suffice. If you prefer to create a digital resource rather than a handwritten one, that will work. But before committing to a computer, consider these three benefits of handwriting your review materials.
First, you have the additional cheat sheet of kinesthetic learning. It’s the main way people take in information and, believe it or not, just writing something down can be extremely helpful for memorization. Second, there are visual aids that come from handwriting a new review sheet that are missed on a computer screen. For example, many people have had the experience of remembering where an answer was on a particular page. If you’ve ever thought, “I remember it was under the alligator picture in the top right corner of the page…”, you know what I’m talking about. This advantage is mostly lost on a scrolling computer screen. Third, successful students know the benefits of arrows, diagrams, squiggles, doodles, and all the other weird handwritten items for studying. You miss that on Microsoft Word. There is no getting around this with the current state of technology.
If you have all your materials, you are now ready for step 2, creating the environment for a successful final exam study session.
2. Set up an ideal environment for studying.
Many students completely miss this element. Consider this: how many college students have you seen at Starbucks with an open laptop, Facebook in the background, Gmail chat in the foreground, Twitter feeds buzzing on their phones, text messages coming in every three minutes, and a chemistry book on their lap? This type of study – if it can even be called “study” – is not particularly useful for studying for the final. High school students must understand this element of studying for finals before they graduate. Your environment matters. It can make or break your study session.
The problem with a bad environment is that time passes at the same speed whether you learn or not. Many disappointed students have spent hours at the cafe preparing for exams, but failed a test due to poor surroundings. Large environments improve study exponentially.
Large environments, while different for each individual, will have certain things in common. Social networks will be kept at a distance. As difficult as it may seem, it has to be done. Say “Goodbye” to Facebook for an hour. Twitter, SMS, Voxer and HeyTell have no place in a final study session. More traditional media like television are also to be shut down for a while. Create an environment where you can focus without the constant pull of media all around you. Music can help some students stay focused, but try to ensure it is instrumental and plays quietly in the background, if at all. The more calm and focused your environment, the more productive your study session will be.
3. Focus your studies on the most important ideas and details.
When studying for the final, you should not re-read the chapters. Reading is an important part of the learning process, but it’s too comprehensive to be useful on a final exam. You only want the most important and important details. Birthdays, maiden names, pet names, favorite colors, and state flowers are generally not included in final exams. Essays on major thought movements and the major thinkers involved are in final review.
To be successful in your finale, you may or may not focus your learning on the most important ideas. If you can, you are sure to get a higher score in less time studying. If you can’t, you’re sure to know a lot of information, have spent a lot of hours in the library, and not understand why so many things you studied weren’t on the exam. Learning what to learn is as important as learning how to learn.
Get to work on what you know. Review the notes you took, create a study guide for yourself, and get the job done. I recommend 50 minutes of study at a time. Separate these sections with a ten minute break to get the most out of your session.
5. Stop studying, sleep and dominate the final test.
There comes a time in each study session when each student must sleep. Sometimes students forget that. They stay up late, drink a lot of coffee, feel miserable and work long hours. Then when the test comes, they get groggy and end up writing weird things.
Don’t write weird essays. Just go to sleep. This is one of the most important things you can do during the study process.
A high school friend of mine drew a sailboat for an essay exam because he couldn’t put his ideas together enough to write a good essay. In case you’re curious, sailboats don’t score well on drafting tests. And yes, it is a true story. You can’t make this up.
If you’ve done your homework, you should be set for excellent performance on your final exams. Relax, know you did your best and dominate the test.
