Make Math More Fun – Truth Behind Making Learning Math Extra Fun
Pleasure means different things to different people. It does not necessarily mean “playing a game”. Making math (or any other subject) more fun happens when a variety of different activities are incorporated directly into daily lessons. Making learning more fun happens when the teacher has fun teaching. Making a class fun doesn’t mean making a day special. Kids don’t need a lot to have fun, which adults often forget with the heaps of toys and activities we provide. Kids are known to have a whole day of fun with an old blanket building fortresses and tents. This article will offer you a simple but effective way to bring fun into daily lessons.
- The fun can be the music. Use a favorite melody to sing the multiplication tables. Allow soft, wordless music to play in the background while working,
- Fun can be colorful. Make flashcards on colorful 3×5 cards, students learn to hail directions in green and answers in orange. Use a colored pencil to do the math! College students enjoy it as much as the youngest!
- Pleasure can be images. Draw a picture to illustrate a problem or set of problems. Students can find pictures in magazines that illustrate some of their homework problems or write their own math problem based on a picture they find.

- Pleasure can be talking with your hands. Design hand signals for math vocabulary or process steps to aid memory. Creating a mantra or chant to recite every day makes math more fun!
- Pleasure can be manipulated. Many schools use fraction tiles or attribute blocks. Everything can be cut and manipulated on desks and reassembled. Post-it notes with numbers can be used to solve problems on the desk. They can be color coded by place value!
- Pleasure can be an unusual way. There are special dry-erase markers that will write on the windows! They can also be used on many desktop surfaces. Jumbo crayons, crayons that are straws, can be the simple thing that makes the lesson enjoyable
- Fun can be interesting creative games. Games of all shapes and sizes can be used in the classroom and still be part of the daily lesson! Pencil and paper games, challenging board games, large full class games where students get up and move around or even outdoor activities all have adaptations available to make learning math even more fun .

It is important that the teacher incorporates these activities directly into the lessons and not as a special activity or separate play time. This creates a positive attitude towards the class as a whole and eliminates nagging students with “Can we play a game today?” Eventually, making learning math more fun will become second nature, incorporating the techniques as a matter of routine in classes of all ages.
